Smoking Fish

Our Social Sciences Topic this term is called "From Fish to Dish".
We have talked about Traditional Maori fishing with Richard deHamel.
We have talked about modern fishing practices.
And as part of our continued Inquiry Process Mrs Egarr invited David and Julina from the Mapua Smoke House to come to school and talk to  Rooms 2, 3, and 4 about Smoking Fish.
Read our recount of what happened.

David and Julina from the Mapua Smoke House came to school.
They came to show us how to cook fish by Hot Smoking.

First they put special brown sugar and salt onto the fish.
The fish went onto a tray inside the Smoke Box.
David put methylated spirits into the little dishes.
David lit the methylated spirits with matches.
There were lots of big flames.
He sprinkled the sawdust from the manuka tree. It made lots of smoke.
The lid went on top of the Smoker Box.
We had to wait fifteen minutes for the fish to cook.
The smell was very yummy.

When the fish was cooked Julina and David put it onto some crackers for us to eat.
We also had some salmon pate.

Yummy! Delicious! Thank you David and Julina for such an interesting and tasty afternoon.
